About us

Why we exist

We’re on a mission to unite Milton Keynes residents, organisations, and institutions in a collective effort to increase clean energy generation and reduce demand, creating a greener, more sustainable future for our city.

Why community energy is different

Community energy is different. Here are some of the key reasons why:

MKCE profits are reinvested in the MK community - JPG

Our profits are reinvested in the Milton Keynes community

Through company law, our governance rules dictate that we are not-for-profit and that our profits must be reinvested for our community benefit - in our case Milton Keynes. This keeps our profits in the local community.
MKCE is owned by our member community - jpg

We are owned by our member community

We are not a privately owned company, but owned by our member community under strict rules. These rules cap any shareholder payments and restrict them to shareholder interest on capital invested.
MKCE generates its own income - JPG

We generate our own income

Community energy works because even when an organisation is small, it generates its own income from the community owned solar (or other renewable assets), over the long term. Of course, more scale amplifies all benefits.
MKCE builds strong partnerships - JPG

We build strong, long-lasting partnerships

We are able to take a long strategic view as our leases are long term. This gives us a secure foundation for developing durable partnerships. We pride ourselves on creating strong relationships with everyone we work with.
MKCE creates community investment opportunities - JPG

We create unique community investment opportunities

As a community energy organisation we can bring unique support to invest in MK - the £10 million Community Energy Fund is a big opportunity for example. There are a number of application dates over the next few months.

Both Milton Keynes Community Energy and Wolverton Community Energy are member organisations, operating under Co-operative principles. Milton Keynes Community Energy is a cooperative company limited by guarantee, registered in England, company number 12009322. Wolverton Community Energy is a community benefit society registered in England, society number 7113. The registered office, for both organisations, is The Old School, Old Wolverton Road, Milton Keynes, MK12 5NP.
